NPR: All Things Considered

The wonderful Madeleine Brand interviewed me about Michael Kimball Writes Your Life Story (on a postcard) for NPR's All Things Considered. It will air today, July 30th, about 20 minutes into the show. I'm really happy that this project that I love is one of the things being considered. Many thanks, too, to Shereen Meraji, Erin Killian, and everybody who has told me their life story.

Just heard you on NPR and wanted to see this stuff for myself! It was great to hear your thoughts and insights, and your work is very interesting! Keep up the "performance art" of writing!

I loved the piece on NPR today. What a great idea. Do you do life stories for anyone who wants one, or it is people you find ??

I also heard the story, and I'm interested in having my biography done. I grew up on a native reservation in northern Quebec. I now live in Baltimore, over on the western side.

I'm on vacation in New Orleans and heard about you on NPR. Love your site... would love for you to do my life on a postcard!

Great story on NPR, and a very interesting project. I think you're part of a growing postcard-as-art trend. I came across the awesome www.abespenny.com
a few months ago; they send subscribers weekly postcards, with each set of four being done by a different pair of artists. I was so inspired by that I started my own postcard journal, Della Cartolina (www.dellacartolina.com, and it's been a blast and challenge wrestling with the same space constraints you do. Since that makes three of us, this must be a new social trend!

I like what you do. I like the fact that I found you on NPR totally by chance. Bookmarked your blog.
Thanks from me to you.

Interesting project - reminds me a little of that Gaping Void guy? But Michael's way more original. Kudos!

Thank you, Lauren, for the kind words. I never expected that writing, as performance, would lead to so many life stories.

Dharma, I write them for anybody, everybody. I have a bit of a backlog right now, but I'm trying my best to keep up. Let me know if you're interested and I'll put you on the list.

Benjamin and Newt, As I mention above, I have waiting list, but I'll put you on it and be in touch as soon as I can.

This comment from Bev seems to have gotten lost, so I'm reposting it (plus I like the thought):
I heard the interview today and was reminded of Orson Scott Card's "Speaker for the Dead." In the far future, any human colonist can request a speaker from the home world to come, investigate the deceased, and then speak that person's life, good and bad, at a public ceremony. The concept's stayed with me for years, it's so compelling. Who wouldn't want that? I think you're onto something.

I'd love to be on your waiting list Michael....I had a long drive home after a tiring day and your story on NPR was a highlight. I love hearing people's stories and would love to tell my own...maybe it's more colorful than I think.
Thank you-Julie

I love your idea, Wyldrose, and I'll definitely put you on the list. You, too, Julie, and thank you for the kind words.

Julie and Newt,

I don't have any contact information for you. Please get in touch if you'd still like your life story written (on a postcard).

Best, Michael
